Much of the town is a conservation area (including Basing mews) and whilst many old and interesting streets in the centre gave way a central car park
St Peters Street leading up to the Church reminds one of pictures in books of Victorian England. Bishops Waltham has the remains of the Bishops Palace on the outskirts and the last vestiges of the railway line that ran to Botley until the sixties can still be seen. Bishops Waltham is a historic country town nestling in the Meon Valley. In the last century it metamorphosed from a commercial centre for banking, local government and farming into a dormitory down with many new businesses and a dramatic rise since the seventies in the number of households.
during the sixties there are still many examples of older style cottages.
